The paradox lies at the heart of all debates about the future of culture in our information-, knowledge-, and entertainment-driven societies: while artists, authors, creative work, and innovation make possible some of the greatest economic and media successes of our digitized and globalized age, the future of the cultural sector itself has never been as endangered as it is today.
This is because the redistribution of wealth and profits is inequitable among the various stakeholders, because inequalities in access to culture continue to deepen, particularly between generations, but also because the public sphere remains largely uncertain about the purpose, scope, and means of its cultural action.
Why oppose the cultured citizen to the consumer of cultural goods? Why oppose the cultural entrepreneur, who explores new territories, invents new uses, and creates jobs, to major institutions or to those who act as cultural intermediaries between eras and generations?
It is as though a new battle were being waged between the Ancients and the Moderns, one that could have only a single winner, at the expense of a shared vision of what culture, in all its diversity, should represent in our democracies as they search for meaning, prosperity, but also for connections between citizens, cohesion between generations, and a “common good.”
In a context of widespread crisis that is calling into question the very meaning of public action, as well as civic engagement in our democracies, the time has come to think together—and to imagine together—what the culture of tomorrow can be, and what it ought to be.
