From 12 to 16 October,
European Lab invited the festival-goers of Nuits Sonores Brussels to take part in five days of talks and debates.

On this occasion, European Lab turned into a Media Lab. The role of the Ukrainian electronic scene in time of war was also addressed, as well as the issue of the inclusion on artists with disabilities within independent cultural structures.

European Lab came back to Brussels to invite Elie Barnavi, historian, former Israeli diplomat and co-founder of the Museum of Europe in Brussels, and young senior official Chloé Ridel to discuss the geopolitical challenges related to the war in Ukraine.

Artists and stakeholders in the Ukrainian cultural scene have been working together since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Everyone is taking part in the war effort at their own level to help the country according to their know-how, expertise or network. By giving a voice to those involved, this conference will illustrate the resilience shown by the Ukrainian artistic scene during this period, while reminding everyone how they can act in a spirit of solidarity.

How do we address the new generations?

Despite the disaffection of the new generations with the "traditional" press, some media, emerging or otherwise, are reinventing themselves and managing to address younger audiences and new readerships. The stories they tell, which are more committed and sometimes blur the boundaries between journalism and activism, are in tune with the concerns of these younger generations, particularly on ecological issues.

Connecting, exchanging, becoming stronger: the role of networks for independent media

In a context of the strong concentration of national media landscapes, the need to establish links between independent media in Europe is more important than ever. In the East of the continent, the Russian invasion of Ukraine has accentuated the need for solidarity between media.

Podcasts have become a strong tool of information for media companies and organizations that desire to build a special link with their audience and boost their revenues through other forms in addition to traditional advertising. Podcasts in journalism can be key to gain back trust of the readership as they are one of the most intimate of journalistic information-sharing out there.

Charlotte Puiseux is a doctor of philosophy, a member of the handifeminist collective Les Dévalideuses and of the non-for-profit Handiparentalité, and an author and activist on disability, feminism, sexuality and gender issues. She published a book entitled "De chair et de fer, Vivre et lutter dans une société validiste" (La Découverte), in which she retraces her history of violence and discrimination and deciphers the ideological system that supports them: validism.
